Passiflora is the largest genus of the family Passifloraceae, which has more than 530 species. It grows mainly in the tropical zone of the Americas and only 22 species grow in South Asia, Australia and Oceania.

In 1569, the Spanish conquistadors discovered the Passiflora in Peru. They believed that flowers symbolized the passion of Christ and were a sign of approval of his explorations.

La Passiflora is in products herbal used as sedatives to promote calmness and relaxation. Other herbs commonly used in combination with this are: German Chamomile , hops, kava, skullcap and Valerian. Passiflora extract is also used as a flavoring agent in certain foods and drinks.

The Passiflora is one of the main components of some natural products such as Dr. Relax Pro .

Formerly the Passiflora was approved in the United States to be used as a natural sedative and sold without a prescription; but in 1978 it was removed from the market since it had not established its efficacy and safety.

Benefits of the Passiflora

It is possibly effective for treating some of the following symptoms:

  • Anxiety. The evidence indicates that the Passiflora can reduce symptoms of anxiety even more effectively than drugs
  • Narcotic drug withdrawal syndrome
  • Psychiatric disorder called "adjustment with anxiety disorder"

Other herbs that tend to be used in conjunction with the Passiflora are: Hawthorn, Holm oak and Valerian, who have mild sedative effects.

Precautions

La Passiflora is probably safe for most people when consumed it orally. May not be safe if it is ingested in large amounts. The Passiflora can produce side effects such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Irregular coordination
  • Altered state of consciousness
  • Inflammation of the blood vessels
  1. Do not take Passiflora if you are pregnant or going through a period of lactation. Some chemicals from the Passiflora may cause contraction of the uterus.
  2. Stop taking Passiflora at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.
  3. Taking Passiflora along with sedative medications may cause excessive drowsiness.
