How to combat allergy to the sun

Como combatir la alergia al sol

One of the causes of stinging or painful lesions on the skin, redness, vesicles, or ulcers, when exposed to the Sun, is misnamed "Sun allergy". "Polymorphic light eruption" is not a true allergic reaction, even if the symptoms are very similar, hence its name.

Allergy to the Sun is a reaction that our skin suffers when affect the Sun's rays are especially intense, as in summer. Really now the exact cause is unknown, but even so, there are some ways to deal with its effects.

Symptoms can develop even using sunscreen. They do not appear immediately, it may take from hours to days from exposure Sun until they appear.

Allergy to the Sun can be a temporary condition that can be affected by only a few hours, or it may be chronic requiring medical intervention. Chronic allergy starts usually in the form of minor eruptions, which can become serious skin problems.

Symptoms

Although all skin areas may be affected, are the most exposed to the Sun which suffer the most.

The symptoms that arise are diverse:

  • Papular urticaria

They are small elevations of the skin, distinguishing two types of fundamental according to its shape and features. The most common are small (between 1 and 3 mm) close and join; and more infrequent, mild hemorrhages into the skin along with injuries such as edematous papules, papulovesiculas and crusted lesions.

  • Plates

Thickened and inflamed lesions that may range from 1 cm to 30 cm.

  • Ulcerative allergy

It is a combination of papules and ulcers of various sizes.

Diagnosis

The first thing to observe the lesion on the skin would be ruled out that it is not reaction to insect stings, Burns, or allergic dermatitis. This is important because treatment differs greatly from an allergy to the Sun.

There is an easy way to know who is allergic to the Sun, using the foto-provocacion, radiating an exposed area of the skin to UV RAYS. If it's allergy to the Sun already described symptoms, itching, papules occur

The skin reacts quickly to sun exposure, but also these symptoms usually disappear within a few days if we allow us to expose to the Sun. Generally, this disease tends to be chronic and is diagnosed for the first time in childhood or adolescence.

Causes

Although the primary cause is unknown, it is known that 75% of the cases is by exposure to UV RAYS, 10% UVB rays and the rest to a combination of both. It is a photodermatosis.

One theory proposes that there is an immune reaction of the body caused by a few sensitive receptors in the light of the skin cells. Normally, the UVB weakens our immune system, but this does not occur in people allergic to the Sun.

Another theory says that there is an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants in skin. This is seen in people with sensitive skin, as in the cells of your skin, large quantities of radicals are formed free that stimulate the production of a molecule (MAC) which is involved in inflammation. When there is little vitamins E, C and antioxidants (beta-carotene) typical of Sun allergy reactions occur. This comes corroborated the annoying symptoms when consumed a specific antioxidant, the EGR is reduced.

Prevention and treatment

The patient normally seeks to quickly relieve the symptoms, so it resorts to products that will reduce the typical manifestations of inflammation and redness (corticosteroids), and antihistamines for itch relief. But this does not cure the disease, only masks it, so we focus on treatment for the cure. First we will take preventive measures:

  • We will avoid the causal agent (the Sun) in the best of our ability. We will use hats, clothing and adequate sun protection.
  • We get used to the skin slowly in the Sun. You can make use of desensitization through phototherapy therapy (must be performed under the supervision of a specialist), so get used to our skin to high levels of ultraviolet radiation UVA and UVB.
  • Avoid the use of perfumes, deodorants and cosmetics to the Sun.
  • Consuming antioxidants
  • Consuming omega-3 oil is an aid to prevent symptoms of allergy to the Sun.
