Sweet and sour chicken

Sweet and sour chicken is a traditional dish of China which is cooked throughout Asia, although each country has its own Variant. Here we teach you how to prepare the version China, which is the best known and the most widespread both within and outside of this continent.

Option 1: sweet and sour chicken


For the chicken:

  • 300 g of chicken breast
  • 125 g of red pepper
  • 120 g of pineapple
  • 100 g of onion
  • 1 piece of ginger
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • A good amount of cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 dash of Chinese rice wine (can substitute for dry sherry)

For the sauce:

  • 150 ml of water
  • 60 g of ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • Heat water, ketchup, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, salt and stir well.
  • When you have reduced a little, remove from heat and set aside.
  • Chop the garlic and ginger, cut the onion and diced peppers and chicken into large chunks.
  • To marinate the chicken, mix the chicken with the soy sauce, rice (or jerez) wine and egg in a bowl and mix it all well.
  • When everything is well integrated, coat it with a good amount of cornstarch.
  • Fry chicken pieces in enough vegetable oil over high heat and when they are well browned, remove to absorbent paper.
  • Saute the garlic and ginger in a pan with a drizzle of oil.
  • When start to smell good, add the pepper, onion and sauté for a couple of minutes.
  • Add the pineapple and continue sautéing for 1 minute more.
  • Add the sauce and a little cornstarch dissolved in water so that it thickens a bit.
  • Add the chicken and stir everything.

Option 2: sweet and sour chicken

Ingredients (for 4 people):

  • 4 boneless chicken breasts
  • ¼ l of broth
  • 3 tablespoons pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of corn flour
  • 10 ml of vinegar
  • Salt


  • Clean and wash the chicken breasts salt and pepper them.
  • FRY in a little oil until they are golden brown. Book.
  • Heat the sugar with a little water until it is slightly caramelise, add vinegar and broth, finally add a little pink or green pepper.
  • Put the corn flour dissolved in water and let it thicken.
  • Cut the chicken breasts into fillets and add them to the sauce. Let stand for a minute and serve.

Option 3: chicken in sweet and sour sauce

  • Chicken breasts (aprox. 1 for every 2 people)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • Crushed tomatoes
  • Soy sauce
  • Olive oil
  • Black pepper
  • Orange juice
  • Sugar


  • Clean, wash, chop into cubes and salt and pepper the chicken breasts. Place in a large baking dish and sprinkle with olive oil.
  • Preheat oven to 190 ° C.
  • Peel and cut the onion into julienne strips and FRY in hot oil, until it is poached.
  • Add a splash of vinegar, a glass of orange juice, another of soy sauce and crushed tomatoes.
  • Bake the chicken at the top and at the bottom for 30 to 35 minutes, turning halfway so that they become well.
  • When the chicken is ready, water with sauce and serve.
