It is known for its calming and sedative effect. Used mostly for regular sleep disorders. Consumption of valerian is common especially in people that they suffer from insomnia.

It is a European plant but that has been extended to all parts of the world and grown in humid areas.

Properties of valerian

  • It is a plant with high levels of sedative agents that relax the nervous system and mind. Does not deplete or weaken consume Valerian, who so it is highly recommended in cases of people who can not get to sleep.
  • It is also very good for cases of anxiety or stress, which have as a consequence headaches, hysteria, migraine, hypochondria or stomach aches.
  • Valerian in addition serves to relieve feelings of sadness, anguish, anxiety, emotiveness and nervousness.
  • It helps to stabilize the heart rhythm, being very good option for those who suffer from arrhythmias.
  • Other uses of this plant: pains of joints, syndrome of chronic fatigue, mild tremors, attention deficit disorder, or muscle cramping menstrual, menopause, inflammations (to treat diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, celiac disease).
  • Finally, Valerian is recommended for those who are trying to quit smoking or drinking alcohol, because it avoids the nervousness, the withdrawal and anxiety.

Contraindications of valerian

This plant may not be mixed with alcohol because it intensifies the effect of sleepiness, as well nor with medications for depression or sedatives.

Not recommended during pregnancy, in breastfeeding stage or in children less than three years. The oil of Valerian is not indicated for children under 10 years or for those who suffer from respiratory allergies. It was found that it reduces the speed of action some remedies in the liver.

How to consume Valerian?

This plant is available in the following presentations:

  • Capsules: the dose recommended by a specialist (between two and six per day) should be eaten. To be able to sleep, they take half an hour before going to bed and with a maximum of two hours.
  • In fluid and dry extract: will consume 1-2 grams per day, divided into three doses. In the case of the fluid, they come in the form of drops.
  • As essential oil: healthier than the other two options, because it comes from the root of the plant. Drops, consume some two or three times per day.
  • Infusion: is the more natural choice, since you can directly take some leaves of valerian that we have in the garden or patio and place in a bowl with hot water, which should be left to stand for at least five minutes. Do not drink more than three infusions per day.
